Flip That Hockey Card: 1959-60 Topps #28

This is the first in what will be an semi-regular, on-going series of articles on Vintage Hockey Cards Report. Periodically, we’ll be taking a hockey card recently purchased off eBay and trying to turn it around on eBay for profit. These ‘Flip That Hockey Card’ challenges are for fun and to maybe prove that money can be made from buying and selling on eBay. They are not meant to ridicule that seller that the cards were originally purchased off!

Here’s the deal: Each hockey card will be listed on a seven day auction. The starting bid will vary with the first one being set at $.49 more than the original purchase price. Essentially, this means on the first installment, one bid will create a ‘win’. We’ll be fumbling around with the ‘Live Blogging’ plugin we’ve just installed at VHCR to update this article with action on this listing.

The card featured in this first installment is a 1959-60 Topps #28 In Action hockey card. The card is captioned “This looks like a sure goal – but is it?”. On the front of the card, the Chicago Black Hawks are playing the New York Rangers. In net for the Black Hawks is the great Glenn Hall. Attempting to score on Hall is Camille Henry of the Rangers. Also mentioned in the picture is Ed Litzenberger of Chicago.

The card is in decent condition. There is corner and edge wear but the surface is void of any creasing and the back is clean. Beckett values the card at $25 to $40. It is one of 66 cards in the 1959-60 Topps issue with the complete set valued at $2000. A common card is valued at $20. The two most valuable hockey cards in the set are number 47 – Bobby Hull, worth $600 and number 63 – Gordie Howe, worth $400.

About the mentioned players:

Glenn Hall played in the National Hockey League from 1952-53 to 1970-71 with the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Black Hawks and St. Louis Blues. He was the Calder Trophy winner as the NHL’s top rookie in 1955-56. In fact, all three players were Calder winners with Henry winning in 1953-54 and Litzenberger taking the award in 1954-55.

Hall won three Vezina Trophies during his career and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as a member of the St. Louis Blues. Glenn was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975. The Glenn Hall rookie card appeard in the 1957-58 Topps set as number 20.

Camille Henry played in the NHL from 1953-54 to 1969-70 with the New York Rangers, Black Hawks and St. Louis Blues. Henry won his Calder in 1953-54. Camille played together with Glenn Hall with the Black Hawks in 1964-65 and with the Blues in 1968-69 and 1969-70. The only other major award he won during his career was the Lady Byng Trophy in 1957-58. The Camille Henry rookie card appears in both the 1954-55 Parkhurst set (#73) and the 1954-55 Topps set (#32).

Ed Litzenberger played in the NHL from 1952-53 to 1963-64 with the Montreal Canadiens, Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. Litzenberger won the Calder in 1954-55 despite being traded midseason from the Canadiens to the Black Hawks. Oddly, despite being the top rookie player in the league, the Ed Litzenberger rookie card didn’t appear until 1957-58 as number 26 in the Topps set.
