1959-60 Parkhurst #1 – Canadiens On Guard

  • by

Two free tickets to a Stanley Cup playoff game, including an all expenses paid trip for both and a dinner at a famous restaurant! In today’s NHL, a contest prize like that would be valued in the $1000’s. This was the prize being given away in 1960 to three lucky winners and the details were spelled out on the back of the 1959-60 Parkhurst number 1 card hockey card.

The Parkhurst #1 is an ‘In Action’ style card on the front with the Toronto Maple Leafs trying to score on the Montreal Canadiens. The caption on the front simply says ‘Canadiens on guard’. The players are not named on the front and there are only contest details on the back. However, it is definitely Jacques Plante in net for the Canadiens.

Two of the three Canadiens skaters in the picture are identifiable by their jersey numbers. Number 20 is Phil Goyette and number 10 is Tom Johnson. The other Hab in the picture is either wearing a 11 or 17, Montreal had a player wearing each of those jersey numbers that season.

As for the Maple Leafs, I can only make a detective’s guess on one of the three players. The skater in front of Jacques Plante looks to be wearing a number 6. It could be 16 but there was no 16 on the Leafs at the time. If it is a 6, that would make it Bert Olmstead. There are two others in the picture.

The 1959-60 Parkhurst #1 hockey card is valued at up to $125 by Beckett Hockey Monthly. It is the third highest valued card in the series behind Maurice Richard ($250) and Jacques Plante ($200). For the card pictured here, I paid $24 on eBay recently. The card shows a little corner wear but nothing too serious. The front and back have no creasing, stains or paper loss.

If anyone knows who the unidentified players are on this 1959-60 Parkhurst card, please let us know in the comments below.

  1. Little typo – Olmstead was 16, there was no 6. The other two look vaguely like Mahovlich and Pulford, but it’s pretty hard to tell. The Big M would be closest to the net.
