3 Stars: January 15, 1981

It’s the NHL 3-Star Time Warp. Here’s the three stars of the night from January 15, 1981.

3rd Star – Pierre Larouche of the Montreal Canadiens

In a 7-3 win over the lowly Winnipeg Jets at the Montreal Forum, Pierre Larouche led the Habs with four points on three goals and an assist. Larouche scored numbers 10, 11 and 12 on the 1980-81 NHL season and also assisted on a Steve Shutt goal.

For Winnipeg, it was their 31st loss in 44 games to start the season. Goaltender Pierre Hamel faced 48 shots, including five from Larouche and seven from Shutt. At the Montreal end, Richard Sevigny really didn’t have the greatest night, allowing three goals on just 14 shots but came out with the win.

2nd Star – Mike Gillis of the Colorado Rockies

In a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers at home, Mike Gillis accounted for three of the four goals, including the game winner at 15:18 of the third period. Rockies goalie Hardie Astrom deserves honourable mention, stopping 49 of 52 shots in the win. Every skater on the Rangers, except Doug Sulliman, had at least one shot on Astrom in the game with just Anders Hedberg, Eddie Johnstone and Dave Silk getting pucks to the back of the net.

1st Star – Kent Nilsson of the Calgary Flames

The Flames blew out the Detroit Red Wings 10-0 at the Stampede Corral and Kent Nilsson took the opportunity to pad the stats. Nilsson had a hat trick and three assists for a six point game. Kent scored his 21st, 22nd and 23rd goals of the game, including the game winner, while assisting on markers by Bob MacMillan, Brad Smith and Eric Vail. Calgary goaltender Reggie Lemelin turned away 31 shots for the shutout win.
