Third Star – Steve Larmer of the Chicago Blackhawks

In a game between teams with nearly identical records, it was not surprise that the game was tied late in the third and looking like overtime would be necessary. However, with just a minute left on the clock, Steve Larmer scored his second of the game and 28th of the 1983-84 NHL season to give the Blackhawks a 6-5 win over the St. Louis Blues.

The goal was assisted by Tom Lysiak and scored on St. Louis goalie Mike Liut. Rick Paterson also had a pair of goals for Chicago while Joe Mullen and Greg Paslawski had two goal games for the Blues.

Second Star – John Tonelli of the New York Islanders

On his only shot on goal in the game, John Tonelli scored the game winner at 3:40 of overtime to give the Islanders a 5-4 win over the New Jersey Devils. Tonelli also had two assists for a three point game. This was a game nearly blown by the Isles, holding a 4-1 lead more than halfway through the third period. The Devils scored three in just over seven minutes to force overtime.

Taking the loss for the Devils was former New York goaltender Glenn Resch. It wasn’t a great night for Chico, allowing the five goals on just 18 shots. The game featured a pair of shorthanded markers, one by New York’s Anders Kallur and the other by New Jersey’s Tim Higgins.

First Star – Ivan Boldirev of the Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2 at Maple Leaf Gardens and Ivan Boldirev was in on all six goals for the visitors. Boldirev scored the first three goals of the game then assisted on the next three. His first two were scored within a span of 33 seconds early in the first period.

The game featured more rapid-fire scoring. In the third, Eddie Johnstone scored the final Detroit goal at 14:06 to make the score 6-0. 12 seconds later, Gary Nylund broke the shutout. 17 seconds after than, Gary Leeman scored for the Leafs, making it three goals in just 29 seconds.
