Third Star: Stan Mikita of the Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks went north to visit the Minnesota North Stars and granted their hosts a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes on a goal by Bill Goldsworthy. Chicago came back with four unanswered, starting with Stan Mikita’s third of the 1970-71 NHL season at 3:01 of the second, assisted by Dennis Hull.

In the third period of the 4-1 Blackhawks win, Mikita added a pair of assists on goals by Jerry Korab and Cliff Koroll for a three point game. Cliff was an assist shy of the Gordie Howe Hat Trick after a second period fight with J.P. Parise.

Second Star: Ernie Wakely of the St. Louis Blues

Hosting the Detroit Red Wings at St. Louis Arena, Ernie Wakely made 29 saves in a 3-0 shutout win for the Blues. Nick Libett led the Red Wings with five of those 29 but was thwarted by Wakely. Jim Lorentz earns honourable mention, scoring the first two goals for St. Louis.

First Star: Ed Giacomin of the New York Rangers

In a classic goaltending battle at Maple Leaf Gardens, Ed Giacomin and the Rangers came out the victor over Jacques Plante and the Maple Leafs by a score of 1-0. Giacomin made 38 saves in the shutout win while Plante stopped 30 of 31.

Pete Stemkowski scored the lone goal of the game, his 4th of the year, unassisted, 38 seconds into the second period. Paul Henderson led all skaters with eight shots on Giacomin while Norm Ullman had seven.
