$3000! Bobby Hull’s 1958-59 Topps #66 Rookie Card

  • by

The 1958-59 Topps hockey series featured the rookie card of one of the greatest snipers to play the game. The number 66 card from that series, the rookie card of Bobby Hull, accounts for 2 thirds of the total value of the set. Beckett claims that the 1958-59 Topps #66 is worth up to $3000.

Hull’s first season in the National Hockey League came in 1957-58 at just eighteen years of age. Despite having eleven more points, Hull came in second to Frank Mahovlich of the Toronto Maple Leafs for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie. In what would become something of a rarity, Bobby assisted on more than twice as many goals as he scored that first season. He finished his NHL career with 610 goals and just 560 assists.

Prior to his days as an NHL superstar, Bobby Hull developed his craft with the OHA’s (predecessor to the Ontario Hockey League) St. Catherines Teepees. The Teepees were sponsored by the NHL’s Chicago Black Hawks and would later change their name to that of the NHL team to refect this.

In Hull’s final season with St. Catherines, 1956-57, Bobby contributed 33 goals and 61 points in 52 regular season games as the Teepees finished with a less than stellar .500 record. Despite finished third in the seven team OHA, St. Catherines made it to the playoff finals before losing out to the Guelph Biltmore Mad Hatters. The Biltmores finished atop the OHA during the regular season and were led by none other than Eddie Shack.

Bobby Hull was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983 on these outstanding NHL merits:

  • 3 time winner of the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s top point-getter.
  • 10 time NHL First Team All-Star and 2 time Second Team All-Star.
  • 2 time winner of the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s most outstanding player.
  • 1 Stanley Cup victory with the Black Hawks in 1960-61.

Hull’s second career in professional hockey began in 1972-73 as the poster child for the rebel league, the World Hockey Association. Hull

played for the Winnipeg Jets from the league’s inaugural season until its finale in 1978-79. In 1974-75, Bobby scored 77 goals which topped Phil Esposito’s mark by one as most goals in a professional hockey season. Hull was the WHA’s MVP on two occasions and was a major part of the Winnipeg Jets winning the Avco Cup on three of seven possible occasions as the WHA’s playoff champion.

Despite only playing four games for the Jets in the final season of the WHA, 1978-79, Bobby came back to appear in the NHL one last time in 1979-80. He began the season with Winnipeg, playing in 18 games. He finished off his career with nine games in a Hartford Whalers uniform, along side fellow hockey legend, Gordie Howe.
