The 1974 Philadelphia Flyers Stanley Cup Run on Cardboard

  • by

In 1973-74, the Philadelphia Flyers became the first post-1967 expansion team to win the Stanley Cup. The Broad Street Bullies were led by a cast of tough guys and highly skilled players, many were a little of both. The Flyers finished the regular season with 112 points, first in the West Division and one point behind the Boston Bruins for the overall lead.

O-Pee-Chee celebrated Philadelphia’s 1974 Stanley Cup run with five cards in the 1974-75 set.

Just the facts:

  • Philadelphia was the first non-original 6 team to win the Stanley Cup since the 1934-35 Montreal Maroons.
  • Bernie Parent was the Conn Smythe Trophy recipient.
  • During the regular season, Philadelphia was 1-3-1 against Boston. The won the final series against the Bruins 4-2.

The Flyers met the Atlanta Flames in the quarter-finals. It was Atlanta’s first ever playoff series after entering the NHL for the 1972-73 season. Philadelphia swept the Flames. Atlanta would win just 2 playoff games before moving to Calgary and better times in 1980-81. On the front of the card is Rick MacLeish of the Flyers battling for position with Tom Lysiak of the Flames.

Please help me with this one! The 1970’s was such an awful time for facial recognition for me. The Rangers player is definitely Walt Tkaczuk. The Flyers player – MacLeish without facial hair?

The Rangers pushed the Flyers to the seven game limit but Philadelphia prevailed.

I have always loved this card! I remember being a kid in the 1970’s and my neighbour had this card. He wouldn’t trade it for the world. It wasn’t until 2011 when I actually owned one. For some reason, I turned around and pawned it on eBay (for more than the Beckett BV).
