3 Stars – November 7, 1965
3rd Star – Bob Nevin of the New York Rangers
Bob Nevin had a pair of goals at Madison Square Garden in a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Nevin opened the scoring at 14:49 of the first period with a shorthanded goal with Wayne Hillman in the box, serving a minor for delay of game. Don Marshall and Harry Howell had helpers.
Nevin scored his second goal at 9:34 of the second, assisted by Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert, to make the score 2-0 New York. After Don Marshall made it 3-0 late in the second, Detroit attempted a comeback in the third with goals by Gordie Howe and Ab McDonald but fell short.
2nd Star – Glenn Hall of the Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks roasted their guests 9-0 at Chicago Stadium but that doesn’t mean the Toronto Maple Leafs weren’t in the game. Toronto tried hard to score, putting 41 shots on Glenn Hall but couldn’t get one past Mr. Goalie. Ron Ellis led the way with seven shots for the Leafs but was shut down by Hall. Terry Sawchuk also faced 40 shots at the other end of the rink but his night did not go so well.
1st Star – Bobby Hull of the Chicago Blackhawks
What trumps a 41 save shutout for first star? A six point performance, including three goals and three assists. The Golden Jet assisted on the opening goal of the game, scored by Phil Esposito, a marker that would hold on as the game winner. Bobby scored his 9th, 10th and 11th goals of the 1965-66 NHL season while also assisting on markers by Chico Maki and Stan Mikita.
