Garry Unger – NHL Career

Garry played in the NHL from 1967-68 to 1982-83 with the Maple Leafs, Red Wings, Blues, Atlanta Flames, Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers. He played a total of 1,105 regular season games, scoring 413 goals and assisting on 391 for 804 points. He also sat 1,075 minutes in the sin bin.

Perhaps best known for his ironman streak and his awesome hair, Unger goes under the radar as a goal scorer. In 1969-70 with the Detroit Red Wings, his 42 goals placed him second in the National Hockey League, just one goal behind Phil Esposito of the Boston Bruins. He also had a 41 goal season in 1972-73 with the St. Louis Blues and finished tied for sixth in the league. For points, he topped out at 83 in 1975-76 with the Blues but was far from the NHL’s top ten.

After his NHL career was over, Unger headed over to England for three years (1985-86 to 1987-88). in 1986-87 with the Peterborough Pirates of the BHL Division 1, he scored 95 goals and assisted on 143 for 238 points in just 30 games.

When the Central Hockey League began operation for the 1992-93 season, Unger was behind the bench for the Tulsa Oilers. Tulsa won the league championship that year, beating the Oklahoma City Blazers in five games in the finals. Garry was named the recipient of the Commissioner’s Trophy as Coach of the Year. The following season, Tulsa went to the finals again, this time falling to the Doug Shedden coached Wichita Thunder in four games.
