Number 66 – The Vintage Hockey Card Power Number

  • by

In the numerology of hockey cards, 66 seems to be a power number. Between the 1951-52 Parkhurst hockey card series, when hockey cards became an annual product, and the 1988-89 O-Pee-Chee series, the last before the ProSet era began, twenty number 66 cards are rated by Beckett Hockey Monthly.

Six of those twenty cards are checklists from Topps series in the 1960’s. Often, in the ‘Original Six’ era, the Topps sets consisted of 66 cards so it was logical that the last card be a checklist. The value of these six cards is quite high, ranging from $200 to $400.

The trifecta of $3000 post World War II vintage hockey cards that includes the rookie cards of Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Bobby Orr have two number 66’s. The 1951-52 Parkhurst Gordie Howe rookie card was number 66 of 105. The 1958-59 Topps series consisted of 66 cards but was in the pre-checklist days. Number 66 in that set was the Bobby Hull rookie card. Gordie Howe would once again appear on the number 66 card in the 1975-76 O-Pee-Chee WHA series.

Whether it was intentional or not, over three decades later, Bobby’s son Brett appeared on his first hockey card. The Brett Hull rookie card was number 66 in the 1988-89 O-Pee-Chee series.

Due to scarcity, three number 66’s from the pre-checklist era are worth a decent amount. The 1957-58 Topps Dave Creighton card is worht $50, the 1959-60 Ron Murphy card is also worth $50 and the 1960-61 Vic Stasiuk card is worth $30. All three are definitely not household names and all three played a fair amount of time in the minors throughout their careers.

In the 1964-65 Topps Tallboys series, the rookie card of Lou Angotti of the New York Rangers is valued at $50. In the 1970’s, there were a handful of rated number 66’s featuring star players like Bernie Parent, Darryl Sittler and Doug Wilson.
